Mon Tout Wines from the Margaret River region are Howard Park, but just not as you know it. Second generation, Richard Burch, worked with the Estate’s winemaker, Nic Bowen, to source fruit from across Western Australia to make small quantities of wines with natural fermentation, minimal intervention and sustainability. Basically, this is a place for the winemaking team to explore, but it would also seem a place where they can just have a bit of fun. This Chenin Blanc is from the Margaret River region with fermentation in old French oak and concrete eggs. Yellow/gold, this is quite an edgy and intriguing style. Chenin Blanc is usually one of the longest ageing varieties of all, but this is made in a ‘drink early’ style. The nose has aromas of herbs, stone fruits, guava and a character that is reminiscent of hints of scrambled eggs with truffles. An attractively seductive texture, it is of medium to good length with a supple finish and the freshness remains throughout. A lovely lingering conclusion. Enjoy this over the next two to three years.
Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
