Oates Ends Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2020

2020 is a year to look out for from Margaret River. While much of the rest of the country had a vintage to forget, the west seems to have pulled out a cracker thanks to dry weather and lower yields of intense fruit, as is seen in this classic Margaret River blend.

It is almost too much with explosive aromas of passionfruit and guava – like you’d expect from Marlborough. There are also hints of green herbs, lanolin and hay with subtle vanillin French oak also in the mix. Right now it is then dry and angular on the palate with fruit all wound up in a core of biting acidity. The wine is long, tight and pure right now and will make for a refreshing drink this Spring and Summer. But it will be much better given a couple of years when the layers of complex fruit emerge to showcase how good Margaret River white blends in the right hands can be, such as those of leading local winemaker, Cath Oates.
