Sagrantino hails from the Umbrian region in Italy, where its tannic profile lends itself to wines that comfortably age for decades. Dense and broody in the glass, Christmas cake spice and rich jumble of berries dance with chocolatey charred oak, boot varnish tar, and a weave of spritely florals and rosehip. On the palate this is chewy with a capital C, with pea souper tannins. There’s plenty to enjoy, however, like a lot of Italian varieties, this would really shine brightly with food.
