A slow burn kind of wine, one that changes in the glass, evolves before your eyes, sucks you in. Co-fermented with Viognier and, at first, it’s hard to see where the Viognier fits in, then the aromatics are noted – anise, musk, citrus blossom – subtle and quietly effective. They join scents of cherry, plum and spice. Settles into a medium-bodied expression of the style with some extra, generous Yarra Valley touches such as well-defined, focused tannins and bright acidity bringing the wine together in a taut, clean finish. Oak – 15 months in French barriques, 30% new – is restrained, a nice condiment measured well rather than a dominant force.

Jeni Port is one of Australia’s top wine communicators. Over the years she has written for most Australian wine magazines and these days calls WinePilot home. She is also a Tasting Panel member on the Halliday Wine Companion. She was named Wine Communicator of the Year and Legend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in 2014 and in 2018 Legend of the Vine. She is a founding board member of Australian Women In Wine and is the co-deputy chair of Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards and China’s Wine List of the Year Awards.
