Pimpernel Vineyards Shiraz 2020

A slow burn kind of wine, one that changes in the glass, evolves before your eyes, sucks you in. Co-fermented with Viognier and, at first, it’s hard to see where the Viognier fits in, then the aromatics are noted – anise, musk, citrus blossom – subtle and quietly effective. They join scents of cherry, plum and spice. Settles into a medium-bodied expression of the style with some extra, generous Yarra Valley touches such as well-defined, focused tannins and bright acidity bringing the wine together in a taut, clean finish. Oak – 15 months in French barriques, 30% new – is restrained, a nice condiment measured well rather than a dominant force.
