Purple Hands Colours of the South Mourvedre 2020

Mourvedre, or mataro, is not often known for such approachability as a young wine with this example ready to go straight out of the blocks. It’s also not too savoury with plenty of Barossa richness and power so a great introduction for anyone new to the variety.

Sourced from a single vineyard in Vine Vale there is good depth of colour before it launches into mulberry, earth and spicy fruits with a distinct meaty edge. The aromas are powerful yet also quite complex. It then takes on a more classic Barossa personality on the palate with fleshy dark berry and liquorice fruits again somewhat savoury before finishing with decent length and well integrated tannins. It’s close to its peak but has plenty of stuffing so will cellar over the medium term. Enjoy with braised beef short ribs.
