From a single vineyard in the Clare Valley, which runs to the east of the town of Watervale. This is, inevitably, very young, but it really does have such promise. Free run juice was fermented in stainless steel. The colour is a steely pale lemon hue. A most pungent nose, but it is obvious that this is still ever-so-young. The nose is redolent of lemons – a character not unlike a brand new and just opened bottle of lemon detergent, in the most positive way. There are also notes of freshly sliced limes, just waiting to be dropped into that G&T. Notes of florals and a hint of grapefruit as well. The palate is currently dominated by quite piercing acidity, which will no doubt moderate in time. It is almost like imagining just squeezed lemon juice dripped into an open wound. A mouthwatering style with freshness and length – and impressive length it is. A delicious Riesling with enormous potential. It will handle ten to twelve years with ease.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
