Russell & Suitor Alejandro Saperavi 2024

Saperavi is the famous Georgian grape which is now making inroads in other winegrowing regions around the world. This example is sourced from the Murray Darling region in Victoria. It is a fascinating grape as it is one of the rare teinturier varieties, meaning that it has red flesh. It may seem odd but very few red grapes actually have red flesh. The colour normally comes from the skins (if you don’t believe me, it is very easy to check, next time you have black/red grapes in the kitchen). The team have incorporated the use of both French and American oak for this wine. It tends to be a take-no-prisoners style of grape. Think of it next time you put a steak on the barbeque. A bright crimson/purple, this is a slightly earthy style, but it is muscular and full of flavour. We have notes of licorice, animal skins, leather, dried herbs, plums, mulberries and dark fruits. A wine of medium length with good intensity and rather firm if still slightly supple tannins, this will provide attractive drinking over the next eight to ten years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
