Spiced plum, liquorice, bacon fat, dark cherry and black pepper. It’s rich but restrained. Time in the glass reveals a coal-like smokiness and some grilled meat. It’s attractive in its savoury complexity, with ample fruit to weave it together. The palate has power and breadth, bursting through the mouth with juicy blackberry, blood plum, dark cherry, smoke, bacon fat, subtle leather and black-pepper spice. The tannins are stacked and grainy, and there’s a push of acidity through the back palate to clean things up, though the mouth perfume is loaded with smoky, charry elements. There’s weight to this wine — it’s mighty and powerful, but the balance is there.
