Small Victories Old Vine Grenache 2022

Grenache is one of the most versatile grapes on the planet. Until the 1960s it was Australia’s most important grape, only to be outrun by Shiraz and then Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s played a key role in some of the best Aussie fortified wines and in the old world it’s produced some of the finest expressions as an ingredient within a blend. Now it’s forming its own unique stamp on world wine, as a solo variety. Exciting times!

Enter Small Victories 2022 Grenache, from old vines in Greenock. A little touch of whole bunch (18%) combined with dash of Carignan (11%) and 8 months in French oak have added some layers of complexity whilst maintained freshness in spades. Bursting aromas of satsuma plum, cranberry, forest floor, with blueberry and baking spices. The palate is focused, juicy but fresh, medium weight and pure easy-drinking. White pepper spice washes through at the back and delivers a moreish acidity. More please! In restaurants it’s so great and deeply shows its true versatility – it has the aromatic complexity of Pinot Noir, but the richness and volume of Shiraz – the best of both worlds! Drinki this alongside some Pork cutlets with spicy Asian slaw.
