Tomich Woodside Riesling 2021

Share

We rarely hear too much about Riesling from the Adelaide Hills. I am convinced that is not just because varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and emerging grapes such as Grüner Veltliner are making better wines, but rather that other areas have established and lengthy track records for quality examples. Hard to come from nowhere and top the Clare Valley! All this does not mean that Adelaide Hills Riesling should not be on your radar. It most certainly should be. There are some superb examples and this is right up there with any of them. Pale lemon in colour, this is subtle and restrained at this early stage (and of course, it hails from a stunning vintage for the region). This is a wine of class, finesse and elegance. Notes of florals and a hint of grapefruit, all backed by a wet slate character. There is all exceptional length and the wine is never an in-your-face style. Excellent balance, this is a ten year proposition. Don’t miss it.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
