Villa Elsa Piemonte Rosso 2018

Piedmont in North-Western Italy is home to some of that country’s greatest wines, and some of the best food wines in the world. It is a special place, and you can easily drop $100 or much more for some of the region’s wines.

So when one arrives at the front door under $10, it was a bit of a surprise and it turned out to be a very modern and delicious Italian red. Local grapes Barbera and Dolcetto have been blended with Merlot to craft a food-friendly wine with genuine Italian personality. Is it the best value pizza wine in the world – maybe…

For the price, it is super pretty and complex – aromas of violets, sour cherry and chai tea are followed by a juicy, mid-weight and quite supple palate with soft tannins. There is some elegance about it and good length too providing serious drinkability. So good.
