The pinnacle Shiraz in the Wynns portfolio, Michael is made only in the best vintages. The 2021 release is supremely elegant, defined by lift, poise and mineral detail, all anchored by brilliant structure. Restrained black cherry, redcurrant and peppermint set a tone of refinement, followed by deeper notes of black olive, cedar, subtle vanilla, tilled earth and mocha. With air, the wine reveals salted plum, black cherry liqueur, blackberry, a whisper of old leather, and a background dusting of black pepper spice. The palate mirrors the nose in its elegant line and lifted profile. Black cherry, redcurrant and red plum glide high through the mouth, threaded with a cherry mineral core. Mocha, olive tapenade, cedar and earth provide grounding beneath. A firm stack of grainy tannins provides structure and sets the frame for the fruit to carry through to a long, even finish. This is finely wrought and composed – a graceful release that will evolve beautifully over the next decade or more.
