The fruit for this wine comes from a site scattered with pink quartz in the Stone Well sub-region. According to the notes provided, “…this Syrah reflects our ongoing pursuit: to express Barossa Shiraz with elegance, restraint, and a sense of place.” An incontrovertible truth! Deep but elegant, with iron and ferrous minerality on show from the outset before a filling out of black cherry, blackberry and black pepper. A swirl of the glass unlocks brown spice in the form of nutmeg and clove, along with grilled meat, flickers of graphite and tilled earth. There’s real class here in the wine’s restrained power and lovely mineral presence. The palate follows suit, with a sophisticated iron-like minerality running cool through its core and bringing lift around plum, black cherry and blackberry again. The spice notes dance around the edges. It’s buoyant and lively while still exhibiting excellent depth and character. The tannins are fine-grained but firm, putting up a lovely frame around a long, cool and elegant finish. This is Barossa Syrah/Shiraz as I love to see it – a capture of place but with detail, finesse and elegance in spades. Brilliant.
