For this delicious Grenache, a blend of fruit from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Alex brings together fruit from four different vineyards. 2025 was the warmest and driest vintage experienced here since 2020. The first of the vineyards was planted in 1942 in the Krondorf sub-region. The second contains bush vines planted in 1950 in the Ebenezer sub-region. The third is from the Moculta sub-region and was planted in 1980, while the final vineyard is from the heart of the Barossa Valley, the Marananga sub-region, and was also planted in 1950. Alex incorporates around 5% whole bunches in the fermentation. He does this to moderate the sweetness that Grenache can offer. Maturation is for eleven months in a mix of French and Austrian barrels, between 500 and 600 litres. Crimson/cherry in colour, the nose exhibits notes of wild raspberries, warm soil, cherries, fresh beetroot and florals. A fresh style from the zesty acidity, there is good balance, decent length and a lingering finish. A wine with a promising future for enjoying over the next six to eight years.
Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
