Grampians Shiraz is always a bit of a treat. Lily’s Block is named in honour of B&G’s biggest fan, and there are lots of people who also share her love for their wines. Coming from the Hounds Run vineyard, this is a wonderful wine that’s showing the benefits of a few years in bottle. Popping the screwcap reveals ripe notes of confectionery, raspberry, plum and black cherry, some earthiness and spice. Tertiary development comes in the form of stewed and dried fruits, which give the wine some more depth. The tannins are dusty and ever-present but never distracting, and the palate is darker and richer than the nose. I enjoyed it with a spicy meat dish that paired brilliantly, but it would even be a nice choice for steak or something rich and hearty.
