A big step up from the 50-year-olds to the 100-year-olds – the centenarians, according to the Barossa Old Vine Charter – and the mood and taste changes. There’s more of a presence here, depth, intensity, not to mention integration of oak – which is saying something given the wine saw 24 months maturation time in French oak. Arrives fully formed, no angles, no edges, just rich, sweet black fruit, dark plum, cassis, baking spices offering complexity smoothly crafted. More medium bodied than full bodied and not so bold as elegant. Tannins guide the wine well, allowing fruit the final expression with some attractive herbals coming into play, hints of sage and leaf, on the finish. Nice.
