A wine very much in the exciting, early throes of youth. It is fresh and bouncing in fruit and spice. Black cherry, cassis, blueberry, liquorice, clove, cassia bark and chocolate all roll seamlessly over the tongue. There’s a real energy here. The lively tannin presence, almost silky and definitely well-crafted, works well with the warm, vanillin notes of oak. The maker likes to give its red wines a decent time in oak, this sees 18 months, but the fruit has slurped it up easily, the liveliness of fruit and generosity of spice, singing clearly through it all. All round good drinking here right now and, as always, Château Tanunda is made with aging in mind.
