The Everest is said to represent the “pinnacle” of winemaking at Chateau Tanunda. It might also be said to represent a touch of old Barossa, of big alcohol, bold flavours, the epitome of generosity. The Everest shiraz is definitely of a style, but a well-made style at that.
Bramble, black olive, tar, new leather and black fruits gather, bringing rich and complex aromas. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, actually, it’s quite light on its feet for such a big wine. It’s intense, too, with a lively savouriness best described as a smoked meat character. Ripe tannins help the wine flow to a long finish.

Jeni Port is one of Australia’s top wine communicators. Over the years she has written for most Australian wine magazines and these days calls WinePilot home. She is also a Tasting Panel member on the Halliday Wine Companion. She was named Wine Communicator of the Year and Legend of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in 2014 and in 2018 Legend of the Vine.
