The Coldstream Hills Reserve Chardonnay 2024 is an excellent example of what’s possible with this versatile grape in the Yarra Valley, particularly when paired with toasty oak and nine months of maturation on lees. The nose is slightly muted upon opening yet it slowly reveals some lovely citrus, white flowers and pear characters. The palate is where it’s mainly going on, with nervy acid and teeth-tingling minerality, supported by a medium body and a silky mouthfeel. It’s already looking beautiful but it will continue to improve in bottle for at least the next 5–8 years. Have it with some succulent fish, gooey cheese or even just by itself.
