Curtis McLaren Vale Riesling 2022

Share

Curtis Family Wines are very much a McLaren Vale operation, celebrating the good and the great from the region. This helps explain why we have a McLaren Vale Riesling for openers, but please, before automatically dismissing the wine, take a look – you might be very surprised. Sure, it is different from what we might see from the Clare or Great Southern, but it is surely better that we celebrate those differences. And remember, the very first Yattarna from Penfolds contained a small percentage of McLaren Vale Chardy. The wine world will surprise you every day, if you let it. Another thought, if you like wine options games, you are a dead set Monty to fool your friends with this wine. Pale lemon in colour, we kick off with some floral and tropical notes – we have passionfruit and mango here. Rather atypical for a Riesling, this is very much ripe, forward and richly flavoured so better looked to for drinking early –now and for a couple of years. Worth a look.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
