Drop Zone Pinot Grigio 2021

Share

Pinot Grigio is a relative newcomer to Langhorne Creek – remember that this region has been producing fine wine for many decades. The fruit here is sourced from two vineyards and then softly pressed. A pale yellow with the merest hint of bronze – this might sound odd for a ‘white’ grape but it is typical of the variety unless the juice is removed from the skins too quickly. This is fresh, clean and also slightly neutral, which many may take as a criticism but it is not intended as such. Very often a slightly neutral style makes an excellent match for a range of dishes that would not work with a more assertive wine. There are hints of pears and a touch of citrus, notably gentle lemon notes making a wine well matched to seafood. Crisp acidity ensures good carry and there is also a supportive minerally backing. The wine has good intensity, impressive length and fine balance. Drink now and for a couple of years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
