Fruit is from the Griffins Road vineyard thanks to Pat Griffin’s early plantings in 1990, despite vines disappearing in the 1930s Pat soldered on replanting once again. Sadly after his passing in 2000, a change of ownership, the vineyard was outside the Latta’s family hands for 15 years. Finally the story continues in 2021 when a long lease was secured between new owners, returning back home to Latta hands once again. Since then exhaustive restoration of this site, to organic, biodynamic and regenerative farming will come full circle with certification being awarded in 2027. At 440metres in altitude on deep red volcanic loam. Destemmed MV6 fermented in open concrete indigenous yeasts with no pump over, basket pressed to barriques. This begins with lilac and some soft lavender flowers, moves into fleshy dark cherries and onto woodsy spice. Rye seed and potting soil. Some strawberries seed and pumpernickel bread richness. There is a bushel of dried herb, bay leaf and some kombu umami layering. Full flavoured and yet lithe with energy. A real shop stopper. Drink now or cellar for 10-12 years, these wines do wonders left alone in the depth of cellars. If drinking today this can handle prime beef roast with yorkshire pudding.
