Shiraz and Mataro were “stand out” Barossa Valley varieties in 2024 according to Henschke. You won’t doubt it once the combination of earthy savouriness and lively spiciness hits the tongue. There’s a warm, engaging generosity of black fruits, blueberries, plum, anise and the kind of dark spice that Mataro, in particular, seems to excel in: fennel, sage, black pepper. Five Shillings offers a mouthful of Barossa goodness with an underlying thread of earthy – almost rustic – tannins together with savoury black olive notes. It’s the kind of glad-to-meet-you Barossa red that all so easily keeps flowing glass after glass.
