Great Southern is a standout region for Riesling, and Howard Park have bottled a strong example that punches well above its $30 price point. Sourced from the Porongurup sub-region, this shows impressive mineral presence alongside an unexpected approachability in its youth. Makrut lime leaf, lime skin, riverstone minerality and lemon peel lead the aromatic charge, giving way to savoury notes of Thai basil and lemongrass. It’s zesty and stony, with a lifted, refreshing feel. With air, pretty floral top notes of citrus blossom emerge, adding perfume and delicacy. The palate has excellent fruit weight and drive – lime juice, lemon oil, kumquat and citrus brine sit above those same savoury green herbals, while a streak of mineral tension runs through the core. It’s well structured yet already harmonious, with citrusy phenolics adding just the right amount of grip before preserved lime acidity stretches the wine to a long, mouthwatering finish.
