Mas Doix Les Crestes Priorat 2022

Share

A visit to Priorat in Spain’s northeast should be on every wine lover’s bucket list. Spectacular scenery, wonderful food, great hospitality and truly extraordinary wines. One also feels as though one has stepped back in time to what Spain just might have been decades ago. The reds are Grenache dominant and packed full of an intriguing combination of power and elegance, while never losing flavour. This youthful example is 80% Grenache with 10% each of Syrah and Carignan. Maturation is for six months in a mix of oak foudres, previously used barriques and concrete eggs. Production is 50,000 bottles. Under cork. Blood red in colour, the nose reveals notes of red fruits, milk chocolate, undergrowth, raspberries, dried herbs, beef stock and aniseed. A wine of good length and direction with satiny though abundant tannins. A lovely juiciness, call it freshness or energy if you prefer, is evident at all stages. Enjoy this now and over the next six years.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
