Like the Block 5 Aged Riesling, the Joanna Shiraz is always a wine to watch out for; while 2020 was a write-off in MANY respects, it was at least partly responsible for producing this beautiful wine. There’s a truckload of red and black fruits on the nose and palate, both fresh and dried, with some bramble, soy and leather giving it some savouriness and bottle-age depth. The palate is where the real action is, as the wine is rich and incredibly concentrated, with a mouth-coating energy to it and grippy tannins, all hiding the 14% alcohol really well. Even with six years behind it, it’s in no danger of falling over anytime soon, so I’d safely cellar it for another 5-8 years.
