McLaren Vale sets the highest standard for this Italian variety, thanks to its Mediterranean climate, which has provided the perfect environment for it to thrive. Local winemakers are crafting wines with exceptional style and flair. This wine blew me away upon opening with its vibrant notes of blueberries, mulberries, and spices—a sign of great things to come. On the palate, it is incredibly soft and flavourful, showcasing plum, blackberry, and dark chocolate. The tannins are extracted with mastery, remaining bright, uplifting, and compact. The elegant finish features persistent, polished tannins that pair superbly with food. I found it to be at its best when paired with a Scotch fillet and black pepper sausages, complemented by herbed roast potatoes, rocket leaves, truffled cheese, and walnuts. This combination enhances the wine’s personality, making it a true delight. Do yourself a favour and seek out this wine—it offers immense sensorial pleasure. I have never enjoyed a Montepulciano quite like this before!
