If Soumah’s Ngumby Vineyard Chardonnay is the friendly one, its sibling – Hexham Vineyard Chardonnay – is the more linear and finer edged of the two, and still very much evolving. This is the keeper, the one to put aside for a while. The palate is svelte, lean and almost piercing with a strong acid presence driving tangy green apple, pear, grapefruit, lemon, white peach and honeysuckle. A fine, persistent line of acidity – zesty, fresh and bright – runs the full distance of the wine. An evolving texture is emerging before a mouth-watering grapefruit finish. All the elements are here for a Yarra Valley Chardonnay of some class. Just give it time.
