For locals in the south eastern corner of South Australia, the planting of sauvignon blanc back in 2008 must have seemed very odd in an area best known for its hearty red wines. But the decision was a good one with Wrattonbully now making some of the country’s best, although in a very different style to Marlborough or the Adelaide Hills. These wines are all about texture and subtlety with a mild oak influence rather than showcasing the more explosive aromatics often seen with this variety.
Pale in colour, the 2020 vintage is more restrained than usual but well pitched with youthful grassy citrus fruits plus some savoury lees complexity. It’s almost French in its confident yet understated style. Dry, with good impact, the palate is less varietal; barrel ferment providing texture and nougat complexity plus some cinnamon spice on a lingering and silky finish. Some gentle tannins and leafiness round out a stylish and individual example of sauvignon blanc.
