Taking in the aroma of a top Margaret River Cabernet is one of life’s little treats. Thompson Estate 2020 Cabernet offers a particularly indulgent and fragrant offering in lifted scents of violet, wildflowers, a splash of regional mint, leaf and stem, black cherry, plum, blackberry and earth. Everything comes into sharp focus on the palate: the fruit, the spice, the florals, with just a touch of oregano herbals and aniseed. There’s oak there somewhere but, hey, it’s so integrated it fits right in seamlessly. Medium in body, there’s a nice line of tannins here, fine but firm enough to support the three-year-old and give hope for further medium to long term ageing.
