Pale ruby with garnet edges. Smoky and spicy on the nose, with pomegranate, red plum, Bing cherry, rosewater, cassia bark and flickers of pine needle — light on its feet aromatically, a thread that carries through to the palate. It’s delicate and demure, with cassia bark and nutmeg again, similar red fruit to the perfume, and touches of red liquorice. There’s a touch less concentration than I’d like, with the wine feeling slightly hard-edged and angular, and the finish comes up a little short, with the tannins not quite knitted into the fruit. Understandable given the brutally cold and wet 2023 vintage — a tougher year for the region as a whole.
