Cedar, vanilla paste and cut leather lead, quickly filling out with black olive, dried herbs, paperbark, dark cherry, plum, earth and dark chocolate. A salty, almost brine-like note adds interest. The richness and boldness of the perfume carries through to the full-bodied palate, laden with dark fruits, earth and savoury spice. There’s also a coolness that brings lift and a sense of elegance. Both grape- and oak-derived tannins provide chew and a grainy frame, carrying through to a long finish with bitter dark chocolate tones. At 14.5% abv, this is rich and powerful yet manages a pleasing sense of grace. Time in the cellar will see things even out and soften over ten years or more.
