Here we have Alkina’s self-proclaimed ‘Village’ level Grenache, taken from a range of sites across the stable, some older and some younger. All wild fermented in concrete at cool temperatures with varying levels of whole bunch before maturation in concrete, then blended. Certified organic and biodynamic. This is another seriously good release of this wine. Lashings of mashed strawberry, white pepper and raspberry quickly make way for more savoury tones of black tea, bush garrigue, warm sandy earth, pressed rose and dried orange peel — the latter bringing a Nebbiolo-like sensibility. There’s some crushed rock minerality bringing further detail and shape as things settle and get progressively better in the glass. It’s cool and lifted on the palate with a lovely expansive feel, a firm spread of tight-grained tannins putting a corset around fruit and savoury notes that echo the nose. The structure is grainy and chalky, carrying through to brilliant red fruit and floral-laced length. At once intense and finespun, this only cements Grenache’s place on the podium for the Barossa.
