This Margaret River estate, first established in 1987, has changed hands a number of times but now forms part of the Fogarty Wine Group (Lakes Folly, Millbrook and more). For me, this is the jewel in their crown, with some sensational wines. Sixteen hectares offer a wide range of varieties, made by Julian Langworthy, one of the very best winemakers in this country and currently at the top of his game. They offer a range of levels, with the Redlands very much the value sweet spot in the collection.
Bright, fresh yellows here. If you are expecting the grassy notes usually associated with West Aussie Savvy, forget it. This is all tropical flavours, with mangoes and passionfruit especially plus some ripe gooseberry characters. This is bright and exuberant, seamless on the palate and with decent length. The palate offers similar flavours to the nose, as you’d expect, with a slight minerally backing. Drink now but no issue if you still have a bottle ahead of you in a year or two.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
