Gundog Estate Hilltops Shiraz No 1 2023

Interesting that a winery based in one of the warmer wine regions on the planet has such a fascination with cool climate winegrowing districts. One would think that perhaps there is a little ‘grass is greener’ here, until we look at how good their Hunter wines are. It is more likely that it is simply yet another example of the endless curiosity shown by the better winemakers around the globe. Whatever the reason, it is we consumers who benefit. This cool climate Shiraz is from the Hilltops, one of two they make (and there is also a flagship from the region), and more specifically, from the Freeman Vineyards. A deep blood red colour, the nose reveals fresh red fruits, spices, dried herbs, soy, raspberries, hints of tomato bushes, licorice and miso. A supple texture, fine tannins and decent length are all present and this will impress for the next six to eight years, likely more. Good value.
