The family has had springer spaniels for many years so any label which features that wonderful breed is off to a great start. Of course, what is in the bottle is more important than what is on the label and Matt Burton (the winemaker, not the rugby league player) and his team have that covered as well. This Sem is very much from the modern end of the spectrum, in that it offers enjoyable drinking right from ‘day one’. In days gone past, you’d be lucky to live long enough to see a Semillon reach drinking maturity. That said, this one will also continue to mature well for the best part of a decade – Semillon simply can’t help itself. It will always age well. Pale straw in colour, this is tight and slightly restrained with gentle lemon notes with a touch of the herbals. Fresh, attractive and with slightly vibrant acidity, there is decent length and a minerally backing. It makes an ideal bridge for Savvy drinkers looking to trade up.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
