The Leston Vineyard, a favourite among regular buyers of Howard Park reds, is the source for this little scene-stealer. A mere 10kms from the Indian Ocean, the vineyard seems to contribute an effortless natural balance to grapes and, thereby, its wines. Local vintners believe cooling ocean breezes help retain natural acidity during the ripening period. Whatever the reason, the maritime climate works, especially here. The great Aussie red blend shines. Effortless Margaret River beauty in a perfume of lifted blackberry, blackcurrant, anise, violet, clove, dried herbs and spices. Walks the tightrope of fruit intensity and oak – French oak maturation (18 months’ worth) and two months in American oak after blending – with assurance and aplomb. Fine tannins do their work well in allowing full reign to the gorgeous fruit. Bravo!
