Is this the time to confess that my sister took one look at this bottle and announced that she did not like Chablis, she much preferred Chardonnay (sometimes I wonder if I was adopted). Chablis is, of course, 100% Chardonnay. Needless to say, none was wasted on heathens!
And with this wine, we move up a level to a classic Chablis. Sourced from vineyards located in those famous Kimmeridgian chalk soils, the 2019 vintage gives this wine an added advantage of richness and concentration. There is purity of fruit here and a laser-like focus. The colour is a bright, shining yellow and it is immediately obvious that it is richer, rounder, bolder and riper than its Petit cousin (some will prefer the more restrained style of the Petit, but it is a good thing to have the choice). Look for notes of citrus, orange rinds and florals. There is also fine-boned acidity and it is, as you’d expect, offering more length. Fresh, clean and showing some early complexity, drink it any time you like over the next four to five years. Cracking value.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
