It’s not every day I get to try a 10-year-old Heathcote Shiraz, so this was a real treat. It’s a beautiful wine from start to finish, defying its age with an alluring mix of primary and tertiary characters: confectionery, mulberry, red and black cherry, chocolate, dried fruits and leather. The fruit is still incredibly bright on the palate, which is also rich and concentrated, showing tannins that are fully united. It hasn’t finished maturing yet, so I imagine it still has at least another 5–10 years left in it. It’s one of the nicest expressions of Heathcote Shiraz that I’ve had and I think it will get even better.
