Some wines are made to enjoy without food – save for a nibble or two – while some were made with the very firm idea that food should be forthcoming. This Sagrantino falls into the latter category. Deep impenetrable in colour. Equally dark in the aroma department with rich scents of black cherry, earth, leather, cured meats and dark chocolate. It’s a wine well-structured thanks to the grape’s naturally plentiful supply of tannin. It is filled to brimming in savoury flavours edged in black fruits, woodsy spices, earth and undergrowth. The only question remaining is what do you serve this wine with? Those tannins are going to slurp up a roasted meat dish with all the trimmings. For vegetarians, make it eggplant parmigiana.
