100% Coonawarra Shiraz matured for 12 months in French oak hogsheads (12% new). Always one of Penfolds’ more medium-bodied Shiraz expressions, Bin 128 leans into fragrance, structure and regional definition. Black cherry, blackberry and plum sit alongside cracked pepper, violet, graphite and cedar spice. The palate is energetic and finely structured, balancing bright dark fruit with savoury spice and chalky tannins. There’s lovely composure and freshness throughout, finishing long and finely detailed.

The colour is deep and full of promise, the aroma too with regional blackberry and fine-ground spice on show with cassis, cocoa and vanilla oak. The palate continues in a dark fruited spectrum aided by low key warm, toasty oak and fine-grained tannins which allows the fruit and spice to shine. A side note, lightly savoury with hints of smoked meat, brings another layer but it is the spiciness and overall integration that shines. Oozes potential with some serious aging ability. 2026 – 2040. 95 Points

Bin 28 is multi-regional, and maturation for this vintage was for one year in French oak hogsheads, 12% new. Dark purple with a magenta rim, the nose reveals aromas of black fruits, charcuterie, animal skins, blackberries, aniseed, bergamot, cold tea, coffee grinds, leather and dried herbs. All the building blocks are in place for a classic 128. The wine is of medium weight and offers appealing length through to abundant furry tannins on the finish. It has a slightly chewy finish and should provide pleasure for at least the next twenty years. 2026 – 2046. 93 Points
