The scent of the Pyrenees, a region dominated by the imposing, blue-hued Pyrenees Ranges, is quite distinctive. So, too, the scent of Taltarni’s Estate 2019 Shiraz with its briar, Aussie bush, eucalypt and peppery overtones. It takes you immediately to the Moonambel vineyard and its surrounds. There is undoubtedly plenty of flavour here and, in keeping with the original Taltarni philosophy, which was built around longevity, there is room to grow in the bottle. Chocolate, pepper, earth, leather, blackberry and briar join forces on the bouquet and palate with just a modest cameo role featuring cigar box oak. Tannin management is key to this wine and its future. This is not a wine for immediate gratification (although if you like a well-structured Shiraz like I do, you might care to differ). This demands a little more time and space with well-grounded, firm tannins in play and in tune with well-tempered fruit. Both will grow and expand further – give them time.
