Merlot gets a bad rap in Australia. It’s often justified but sometimes Merlot is the wine you simply want to enjoy because it’s not asking too much of the drinker. It comes with no strings attached; it simply wishes to satisfy. Such is the case with The Pond. Greets the drinker with typical Merlot aromatics and florals with lifted cherry, stewed plums and spice. A generous mouthful of flavour follows, and this is quality fruit with a fair percentage sourced from the Goulburn Valley. Oak is not an obvious feature -centre stage is reserved for a flurry of Merlot fruit – but it buzzes with personality and approachability.
