Brown Brothers Patricia Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2021

Share

As anyone who has ever been to the vineyard can attest, this is cool climate viticulture. The wine spent five years maturing on lees. A yellow gold hue, the nose is an appealing combination of citrus, stone fruits, lemon curd, a touch of peaches, spices and toast. Good freshness throughout, and impressive length, there is a soft and seductive texture supported by a fine line of acidity. There is good persistence here and the wine should provide pleasure for at least the next half dozen years. An elegant local sparkler which is definitely worth seeking outThe blend for this rather delightful Aussie sparkler is 72% Pinot Noir and 18% Chardonnay, according to the information provided by the team. That suggests that either their winemaking is better than their maths, or that we quite possibly have a 10% contribution from Pinot Meunier. The fruit comes from the high-altitude Whitlands Plateau, which is around 800 metres above sea level in the King Valley.

Ken was born and bred in Brisbane, Queensland. He had a non-trendy, perfectly happy childhood, in a family convinced alcohol meant instant condemnation to Hades. But a break fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, and some good wine, started a serious obsession that eventually took over. It did not stop Ken being chastised later for drinking Pol champagne, disgusted he’d drink anything made by a Cambodian dictator. Now, Ken mostly writes on wine, champagne and spirits for various newspapers, magazines and books, but is perhaps best known for his work in The Courier Mail. He also has a little sideline writing on cigars, fishing, travel and food. When not writing, fly-fishing for trout in NZ or bonefish on the flats of Cuba, travelling or smoking cigars, he is no doubt following a variety of sporting teams – the occasionally glorious Queensland Reds rugby, the dysfunctional Washington Redskins, the dodgy Arsenal and especially revels in the world restored to its proper axis with the return of the Ashes to their rightful home.
