There’s no mistaking the variety as classic Gewürztraminer notes leap from the glass. Turkish delight, rose water and apricot blossom provide heady appeal while an underpinning of peach and Meyer lemon ground the wine. There’s some cinnamon quill and a subtle dusting of ground nutmeg thereafter. The palate is fresh and bright, leading with fulsome stone fruits – peach and nectarine – while a mineral note adds lift and the spice and floral notes sit neatly in the mouth perfume. It finishes fresh and cool. This grape variety can often lend itself to wines of overt aromatics, flabby palate textures and high alcohol. Henschke has done a great job of capturing classic notes while retaining freshness and verve from these high-altitude sites. A lovely example.
