Kilikanoon Ashton 1920 Mataro 2020

No prizes for guessing when these old vines were planted. It’s a rich source of wonderful fruit from these vines which are now more than 100 years old. There’s a bright, jubey red fruit character on the nose which immediately appeals – lifted and highly perfumed. It’s been largely hand-made with hand picking and hand plunging in open fermenters before maturation in French oak hogsheads. Mataro is such a good variety with its slightly rustic gamey characters and in this case further enhanced by the juicy blackberry fruit flavours with a spicy lift.
