Never heard of Carménère? After a taste of this medium-bodied, gentle red from Chile, you will want to know a lot more about the grape. It’s one of those varieties, originally from Bordeaux, which was in danger of becoming extinct before finding an exciting new life in another country . . . and hemisphere. Expect an immediate friendship here, one that rests on an enticing array of the ripe and the exotic: dried raspberry, black plum, green peppercorn and jalapeño. Carménère is clean and nimble on the palate thanks to a mineral edge which contributes natural balance. Tannins are well-rounded but still offer structure. The palate plays host to a dark chocolatey note, a savoury one, but not aggressively so. All up, this wine has plenty to offer, bringing a different South American New World flavour profile worthy of further exploration. And all of this for just $7.
