This Macedon producer has taken an entirely different approach with this fascinating take on Riesling. A few barrels were retained, allowing the wine to spend about nine months in old oak on lees before undergoing full malolactic fermentation. Instead of the usual lifted floral and citrus profile, it reveals a savoury, almost honeycomb character that is immediately engaging. The palate is beautifully balanced with just a faint residual sweetness offset by savoury complexity from its time in oak. It’s multilayered while retaining the linear precision that remains distinctly varietal. A brave and superb example of what imagination and foresight can achieve with Riesling.
Ray Jordan has been writing about wine for more than 40 years. In 2011 Ray was awarded WA Wine Press Club Jack Mann Memorial Medal for his contribution to the WA wine industry. His love of wine is as strong as his love of the blues and tasting the thousands of wines that cross his bench each year allows him to indulge in both.
