Valpolicella seems to be enjoying a bump in interest, deservedly so, as some producers of Amarone look to move to more elegant, lighter, less alcoholic and fresher wines (and some continue to make superb Amarone – room for all!). A deep garnet hue here, the wine is quite a fleshy style with plums, red fruits – notably cherries and raspberries – crushed herbs and beef stock notes. A wine of medium length, there is plenty of acidity apparent here and some very fine tannins. Drink this over the next couple of years. It is an easy drinking style, ideal for a casual barbecue or an evening in front of the footy.
