Shaw Wines Riesling 2021

The Murrumbateman region is proving an exciting, if somewhat underappreciated, one for a number of varieties, not least Riesling. The town might sit just outside the ACT border but the district is seen as part of the Canberra wine region.

The grapes are from low yielding spur-pruned vines, which are harvested in the cool of the night at temperatures less than 20 degrees, to ensure the fruit is as fresh as possible. Only free run juice is used here. This is a limpid pale yellow with aromas of bath salts, musk, lavender, florals and citrus. Nice flick of acidity helps carry the flavours the full journey of the wine. Seriously good intensity and persistence here, but there is always the impression of elegance. Attractive talc notes and chalk emerge on the palate, along with limes. Nicely balanced, this should easily drink well for at least five to eight years.
